For the past few years, right before the start of school, Deb Wachs’s LifeGroup meets in a rather unlikely location — a shoe store.
And instead of sharing a meal or discussing a passage of Scripture, they help boys and girls find a brand-new pair of shoes.
Deb Wachs has been serving her community through Metrocrest Services for almost 30 years, helping distribute food baskets at Thanksgiving — and gifts and food at Christmas — to families who would otherwise not have them. Over the years, Deb has also invited her family, friends, and LifeGroup to serve with her.
So when Metrocrest expanded their back-to-school program several years ago to include shoe distribution, Deb’s LifeGroup had the opportunity to get involved. They jumped in, and they’ve never looked back.
“With coffee in hand, our group arrives at 7:30 a.m. on a weekend morning to greet the families who’ve arrived,” says Deb. “Their reward is the joy of seeing the smile on a child's face when they find that perfect pair of new shoes for the first day of school.”
Although they do other service projects, members of the group have commented that this is their favorite. At this year's event, they had the opportunity to serve almost 100 families.
“Many years our volunteering has taken place on a Sunday morning, taking us out of the church pews, but we’re still doing church in the community.”
90–100 families were blessed by the shoe distribution event that Deb Wachs's LifeGroup participated in.
